Trip Ratings

Trip Difficulty Ratings are determined by the Trip Leader for dry conditions and are based on clearance and traction.

Listed requirements are a general recommendation and can be changed at the Trip Leader’s discretion  e.g. snow trips.  All vehicles must be road worthy.

2WD

Driving Conditions:
Sealed roads.
Driver Prerequisite:

Nil.
Vehicle Requirements:
Road Worthy applies to all trips.
Equipment:
UHF Radio (Hand held radios are available for loan).
First Aid kit and fire extinguisher are recommended.
Cargo restraint system recommended.
GPS and paper maps recommended.

Easy

Driving Conditions:
While extra traction will not be required on these roads, we still recommend to air down your tyres and engage 4wd to reduce the risk of sliding on a sandy or corrugated road.
Driver Prerequisite:

Nil.
Vehicle Requirements:
Standard factory clearance.
Road tyres are acceptable.
Suitable for AWD with medium clearance.
Equipment:
First Aid kit and fire extinguisher.
UHF Radio (Hand held radios are available for loan).
Air compressor & tyre pressure gauge are recommended.
(Recovery equipment is very unlikely to be required.)
Cargo restraint system recommended.
GPS and paper maps recommended.

Mostly unsealed roads with no obstacles and minor gradients.

Medium

Driving Conditions:
Vehicle recovery is unlikely to be required.
Driver Prerequisite:

4WD Proficiency Course. (free) 
Vehicle Requirements:
Standard factory clearance.
All Terrain tyres (or speak to Trip Leader)  see Tyres
Low range gearing.
Rated recovery points fitted front and rear.

Medium/Difficult

This trip is intended to be Medium rated trip but is rated Medium/Difficult for one of two reasons.

1.   We have not personally confirmed the track conditions so be prepared to encounter Difficult sections.

2.  There is a small Difficult section which does not justify the whole trip being rated Difficult.

Preparation for this trip is the same as a Difficult rated trip.  See below.

Tracks with some steep and/or rocky/slippery/sandy sections. May have shallow water crossings.

Difficult

Driving Conditions:
Vehicle recovery will possibly be required.
Driver Prerequisite:

St Alfred’s Advanced 4WD Training Course.
Vehicle Requirements:
Above average clearance (50 mm lift).
All Terrain tyres.
Low range gearing.
Rated recovery points fitted front and rear.
Winch recommended.
     (Every 2nd vehicle is to be fitted with a winch.)

Rated recovery points fitted front and rear.
Power winch

First Aid kit and fire extinguisher.

Recovery equipment: Self-sufficient including rated snatch strap and bow shackles, tree protector, pulley block, extension strap, shovel.
Cargo restraint system.

Explorer

The aim of this trip is to explore tracks for a future event (pre-run).
(These small trips are great fun and highly recommended to gain experience.)
Track Conditions:
Unknown – Assume 2 levels above the targeted trip rating (except 2wd trips).

3 to 4
Driver Prerequisite:
4WD Proficiency Course
Vehicle and Equipment – or come as a PASSENGER:
As per “Difficult” requirements.
Your Role:
To help with “spotting” and vehicle recovery.
To have fun and gain experience.
